GI Bill: plan before you enroll
Benefit eligibility, program approval, and payment amounts are separate checks.
Reviewed October 17, 2026 · Serving veterans nationwide
Identify which education benefit applies
GI Bill programs have different service and eligibility rules. Check the program that matches your history instead of assuming every veteran receives the same benefit. Your eligibility percentage can affect what is payable.
Compare the school and your enrollment
Confirm that the program is approved and discuss certification with the school’s certifying official. Tuition, housing, and books may be covered differently based on the benefit, enrollment, training format, location, and eligibility tier.
Build a budget around your actual award and school information. Do not assume housing payments apply to every enrollment situation.
Use the rates for your school year
VA’s current Post-9/11 GI Bill rate period is August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027. That is an academic-year rate period, not a deadline for every veteran to apply. Recheck the official tables when planning a later term.
